Information provided by the Village of Big Bend Police Department

We wanted to call your attention to some possible criminal activity that is taking place in the area.  Muskego Police Department has taken several reports of this activity in their area.  It involves the theft of garbage from the curb after it has been put out for collection.  This is one of the ways in which criminals obtain the information used for identity theft.

They will cruise a municipality on garbage day after residents have place the garbage by the curb for pickup.  The criminals will grab entire bags of garbage and leave the area.  The criminals will then open the bags looking for information they can use for identity theft purposes.  Foremost on their list are discarded charge card statements which show the account number and name of the cardholder.  They will also look for any documents that show banking or savings account information.

One of the things most people simply throw in the garbage when it comes are the solicitations for credit cards.  Criminals will use these forms to obtain credit in the name of the resident who threw it away.  The way to combat this type of problem is to invest in a shredder for your residence.  Before any bills, bank documents, credit card solicitations, or anything else you feel could be used for identity theft, is thrown away, it should be shredded.

Please feel free to contact the Village of Big Bend Police Department at 662-2747 if you have any questions or would like further information about this possible problem.
