BUSINESSES THAT RECYCLING FLUORESCENT LAMPS
According to Karl Hilker of Focus on Energy, some 5 million
Compact Fluorescent Lamps are being sold in Wisconsin annually.
While these bulbs save energy and reduce the emissions from
power plants, they also contain mercury and should be recycled. According to the
Mercury Product Flow Model developed for DNR, an estimated 263 kilograms (580
lbs) of mercury were released to the environment from fluorescents in 2000 --
and this was before the rapid increase in sales of compact fluorescents. The
Council on Recycling has chosen mercury-containing products as one of its
priorities for improving management, and, where possible, the elimination of the
use of mercury.
Focus on Energy has set up a program to facilitate the take
back and recycling of fluorescents at over 250 retailers throughout the state.
Their web page has a locater for these businesses at
http://www.focusonenergy.com/embed.jsp?pageId=648. (Under 'Store Type',
choose the listing for 'CFL Recycler'. )
I encourage everyone to promote the recycling of
fluorescents to reduce mercury emissions to the environment.
John Reindl, Chair
State Council on Recycling

REMINDER: IT IS ILLEGAL TO REMOVE ITEMS FROM RECYCLING BINS
People have been observed taking aluminum cans from
recycling bins left at the curb in several communities around the County.
This is not legal. Once recyclables are set out at the curb, they become the
property of the recycling program. People who take cans out of recycling
bins are stealing and may be subject to fines. If you see this
happening, get a license number or description of the person and call your
local police. Revenues from recycling help keep our taxes lower.

CLEAN
The Town Board of Supervisors requests that after each refuse & recycling
pickup, that everyone remove their containers from the end of their driveway so
the containers are not visible from the roadway. By bringing your containers
back up to your house and keeping them in an enclosed area, it will keep the
Town looking neat and clean, it will keep distractions off the roadway and will
diminish your neighbor’s complaints. Thank you very much for your cooperation
with keeping the Town looking clean.
